Polished Banded Iron Formation (BIF) - Red Jasper and Specular Hematite - 036

This stone showcases incredible red jasper bands mixed with dark specular hematite and capped with a glistening sparkle.  The jasper has traces of yellow, likely goethite or limonite staining that was introduced in small ancient fractures.  A great piece to show off the story of earth's oxygen.

This Banded Iron Formation began forming more than 2 billion years ago, when iron in Earth’s oceans reacted with the first oxygen produced by early life. Layer by layer, those minerals settled and hardened into the bold bands seen in this stone today. Hand-finished to reveal its natural structure, this piece carries a visible record of some of the oldest geology on the planet.
